Meet our Keynote Speaker: Andrew McKean

Andrew McKean is an independent journalist covering the outdoors, wildlife conservation, and natural resources policy beats. He lives on a ranch in eastern Montana, where he contributes feature articles and reporting to a number of national publications.

A native of northern Missouri, McKean started his journalism career as a reporter and editor for newspapers across Montana and the Northwest. He’s the former editor of Rocky Mountain Fishing & Hunting News, and served as information and education officer for Montana’s Fish, Wildlife & Parks department before joining Outdoor Life as its Hunting Editor.

McKean later was promoted to editor in chief of Outdoor Life, a job he held for nearly 8 years before launching his freelance writing career. McKean sits on the boards of several conservation organizations and served on the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission. He’s also a high school track and cross country coach.

McKean is a 21-year Montana Hunter Education instructor and has taught Bowhunter Education for 18 years.

McKean has been active in the national mentoring movement, working to introduce new hunters and anglers to the outdoors. He’s the author of a number of books, including “How to Hunt Everything” and remains Outdoor Life’s hunting, optics, and conservation editor. He has hunted and fished around the world but the prairies of eastern Montana remain his favorite destination.
